True, anonymity breeds stupidity. Think prank calls before the invention of call tracers and caller ID etc. Or other stuff people do when they think noone's watching. Disgraceful, but true.

The irony here is that someone could be watching, but isn't. Imo, the problem is not anonymity per se, but rather that there are seemingly no repercussions. The automated response you get after reporting offences just contributes to the general feeling of "anything goes" (and, personally, pisses me off). Hell, if someone cybered me, I wanna know whether my report has actually been read! I also want to know exactly how many bricks (if any) they dropped on the dweeb! Ban, confiscate a few plat, delete an elite skill, whatever. A few more PlayNC employees in that department would go a long way imo.

But then we'd have threads on "the freedom of speech", "lighten up" threads and other such crap.

Yeah, Temple of Balth is just a place for all the 12-14 year olds to hang out and talk about stuff they aren't allowed to at school...

Although I agree the vast majority of the problem here is that anonymity breeds bad behaviour, I wonder what portion of the problem stems from the fact this game is free. Does free online play equal a lesser quality of players? Does free online play allow people to feel they can take whatever risks they want with their own behaviour? Where a subscription fee might keep them in line a little more?

I played WOW, city of heroes, and many other 'pay to play' games. Trust me, it is no diffrent. If anything it's even worse.

Yesterday I met someone who tried to sell me a charr carving as a minipet for 5k. When I didn't buy it he said he'll report me for wasting his time. Today some random guy whispered me asking to rush him through THK, after several polite refusals and pieces of solid advice he tells me to go F myself and threatens to kill me.

"Can you feel the love tonight?"

I've said this before, but it's one of my favourite quotes, and I'm going to trot it out here again:

It is better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.

People to spew ugly commentary, who use "creative spelling" to subvert the word filter and thereby offend even more, who invoke horrible, racist and sexist commentary, who talk casually about offensive acts, who threaten or harass, who scam, who cheat others, who abuse... all these people will be dealt with, fairly and appropriately, and especially if you will help us. Go to the Support Page on the official website. That's http://www.guildwars.com/support/ Click your region. Set up a PlayNC account -- it takes about three minutes. From then on, reporting is simple and quick. Give time and time zone, date, location, and exact spelling of those involve in behavior that we need to investigate. Send a screenshot if you like, though a screenshot isn't absolutely essential. We'll do the rest.

We're committed to making the gameworld a better place, and those who help us do so are champions for that noble cause: A fun and pleasant game, for all!

I would like to know what is the minimum punishment for offensive commentary? Just wondering because I used to report lots of them with screenshots and usually some of these same guys were there again writing all kind of crap just like before. Checked the places couple times per day. Expected them to have at least couple days ban.

Probably not much. A temp ban of at least a day for offensive language, I guess, which should ideally knock the message home that bad language really does = baaaaaad.
Although lost causes would probably rack up enough marks on their account to warrant a permaban with enough reports... =\

I'd be lying if I said I didn't sometimes just log on GW to piss people off. Were all sadistic sometimes... there is no punishment for being offensive... trust me I've said some really f'd up things and been reported many times and never had so much temp ban.

Erm. How could you actually tell you've been reported?

You can't say it's because someone said they did, becuase that could have just been an idle threat.

I agree with you, although today I had an experience that completely contradicts this. I feel that the GW community is getting better and better.

Every time I report someone, I add them to my friends list. I've reported 6-8 people, I'd guess, and have never seen even one of them log on again.

Now, I only report people for EXTREMELY bad behavior, but I'd have to say that I'm very pleased with Anet in this regard.

One thing that I wish everyone would do is actually report people when you say you're going to. Don't ever, EVER make an idle threat. The only thing that idle threats do is make people think that Anet doesn't care, and they'll act even worse in the future.

"LOLZ! That nub reported me and nuthin' happnd! FU ANET!"

Nobody wants that. Tell them they've been reported, then report them. It's easy and it works.

yes yes anonymity on the net makes people into jerks....

we've heard this a million times before. This topic is a waste of internet space and bandwidth imho.

Not all people are completely dishonest at least. I was in Beacon's D1, and there was a person spamming that anyone who could catch him would get 10k. I ignored him, guessing that he wouldn't really follow through and switched district. When I arrived in my new district, I noticed him there and guessed that he switched districts to avoid being caught. I opened trade with him and said "Caught you." Funny thing is, he actually gave me 10k.

i really doubt it would work. if anything it would do the opposite. and the idiots would be in the high end of the scale while the nice people would (mostly) be in the low scale
It could work in an analagous manner to Google's Pagerank algorithm. Web pages with higher rank lend more weight to outgoing links, whereas the weight of the "vote" carried from spam pages to outgoing links is almost nothing. A long iterative process is used to make the resulting graph stabilize.
